Focus on Gaza: Israel's Crimes of War - 20 Feb 09 Amnesty International investigates war crimes in Gaza Israeli war crimes under the microscope part 1 of 2 of The Russell TribunalIsrael's un-restrained, indiscriminate and wanton destruction of life, livelihood and infrastructure in the besieged Gaza Strip has surely amounted to crimes against humanity, and against all recognised international codes of conduct to safeguard civilian lives in a conflict zone. Clearly, and against all protestations to the contrary, the lives of at least 1300 innocent civilians, about a third of whom were children, have been disregarded as inevitable collateral damage. By the same callous indifference, thousands more have been injured, maimed, and traumatised in a continuous bombardment of homes, public areas and the general infrastructure of Gaza.
High witnesses, including UN representatives on the ground and reliable journalists, bear witness to atrocities like the deliberate shelling of UN refugee shelters, schools, hospitals, ambulances, and the cold blooded killing of children in their homes; the ill disciplined IDF leaving graffiti scribbles of contempt. Such frenzied actions by 'Rambo' soldiers can only be attributed to some discredited dogma, and indoctrination of immature minds, that attempts to justify the killing of a 'lesser created people' and in the case of young children, persons who could one day present a future threat.
During the 6 month 'truce' between Israel and Hamas government in Gaza, there were reported 129 Israeli violations including aerial bombardments of Gaza and assassinations of its peoples. These violations prompted rocket reprisals from Gaza. Israel maintained a stranglehold blockade on the small coastal strip creating misery and shortages of food and everyday welfare on the besieged population. This was tantamount to an 'open prison'. Now following the Israeli blitz a state of desperation has been created with fear, shortage of food and medical supplies and trauma to the population especially to the children. Throughout the conflict Israeli propagandists continued to deny there was a problem.

The use of totally disproportionate bombardment by air, land and sea of Gaza mirrors the 2006 Israeli destruction of Southern Lebanon, and both actions can only be viewed as some 'collective punishment' of peoples as a measure of Israeli wanton contempt for their governments. These acts of devastation in highly populated areas including refugee camps represent war crimes under international law.
In the final days of the 2006 Lebanon assault, and as a parting gesture, tens of thousands of cluster bomblets were dropped on the densely populated border area of Southern Lebanon. These unexploded devices are still taking their toll of unsuspecting children. Russia is reportedly helping with the de-mining operation

Former US President George W Bush in his final days of office must have given the 'green light' to Israel to attack Gaza. It is most likely that the members of the 'Middle East Peace Quartet' (Russia, USA, European Union, United Nations) were also forewarned of the assault on Gaza, but chose to stay relatively muted. The Arab League of nations was also divided on the issue. Now the most serious division of all is that between the Palestinian factions Fata and Hamas which Israel continues to exploites in order to rule and oppress them both.
Tony Blair as Special Envoy to the Quartet has proved to be singularly useless as a peace broker in the Middle East, but no doubt that his recent and first visit to Gaza has allowed him to see the total destruction to which his inaction contributed.
